Built Work

2017  / Berlin, Germany. Critic: Dagmar Richter. In collaboration with Alicem Bozdag.

After the fall of the Berlin wall, most of East Berlin was abandoned as people fled for a new life. The city became filled with West Germans and other Europeans who wanted to explore its empty buildings and streets. Soon enough, the spirit of Berlin became that of freedom and celebration as music and dancing filled every corner of the city. The Eisfabrik, or ice factory was famously one such site, but may soon be torn down by a corporate company. To preserve its cultural relevance, we propose puncturing the factory and repurposing some of its material as follies, activating not only the closed-up factory, but also the surrounding landscape to be explored by the wanderers of Berlin.
